Horizons

About this program
Horizons works with families and children where difficulties are being experienced due to the impact of one member of the family having a mental illness.

Horizons offers home visiting and counselling support as a means of assisting families to strengthen their relationships and rebuild their capacity to care for themselves and their children.

The length of time and the level of intensity we work with families is determined by the specific needs and issues identified by the family.

Who can use the program
This service is for families in the ACT who have at least one child between the ages of 0 and 8 years.

The mental illness in the family does not require a clinical diagnosis for the family to be eligible for the service.  Horizons is a free service.

How we work
We focus on building a relationship with the family in order to support them in achieving their identified goals.

We do this by:

  • visiting families in their homes on a regular basis and working with them in a variety of ways to achieve these goals;
  • ensuring safety for everyone in the family;
  • building on the skills and capacities the family already has;
  • learning new ways of parenting;
  • improving family communication;
  • helping children change problem behaviour/ school difficulties;
  • strengthening family’s knowledge and connection to community services;
  • supporting families early in the life of the child and early in the life of the problem.
