About this program
The Family Skills program aims to help men build on their parenting
strengths, share what works for them, and to learn new skills
in a supportive environment. It is part of Marymead's Family Skills
area, which provides programs based on group processes and techniques
aimed at building trust and exploring new skills. This approach
is based on strong evidence that early intervention within a positive
group work environment is a beneficial and supportive way to enrich
families and enhance relationships between parents and children.
Participants in the program are supported by transport, childcare
and a meal in a friendly accepting environment. During the year
we offer a number of group work options that may include: four-week
courses, and a number of individual themed sessions including
Managing Strong Emotions, Communicating with Children, Children's
Safety, Playing with Children, Managing Children's Behaviour etc).
Who we work with
The Family Skills program is aimed primarily at fathers who
find parenting more challenging than other fathers. This includes
men from linguistically and culturally diverse backgrounds and
other groups within the community with high and complex needs,
eg fathers who have separated or those with children who have
a disability, families where there is a history of domestic violence
or child protection agency involvement.
