Fostercare

About this program

Marymead's Foster Care program provides care for children who cannot live at home.

We assess, train and support foster carers who care for children in their own homes. Some children need care for short periods of time, while others may need to stay with a foster family for a year or two. Other children become part of a foster family for life. We support and encourage the best possible relationship between children in foster care and their birth families.

We try to ensure that children have the best quality of life possible. We are interested in the health, educational, cultural and social aspects of a child's life. We believe that it is important for a child to maintain their relationship with their birth family.

We also provide short periods of Respite Care to provide a break for pressured parents.

Who we work with

We work to support children who cannot live with their own parents. Children range in age from infancy to 18 years, though most children come into the program when they are under 12.

The foster care program works with staff from Office for Child, Youth and Family Support, foster carers, the birth family and all other professionals and organisations which have an involvement in the welfare of the child.

If you want to use the foster care service

All referrals to the foster care program are made by ACT Office for Child, Youth and Family Support. Children referred to the foster care program are aged between 0 - 12 years.

Families, Parents and professionals may contact us directly about the respite care program.

Ways to help

You may be interested to help a child by becoming a Foster Carer or Respite Carer.

If you are interested in becoming a carer, contact the foster care staff at Marymead. There is an informative brochure available. Carers are trained and supported by Marymead staff and receive a tax-free allowance to help them cover the expenses of caring for a child.

You can support the work of Marymead by asking to be put on our mailing list, which will keep you informed about our activities, including fundraising and volunteering.
