Grandparent’s Group

This program at Marymead is a support service for grandparents who are the primary carer (or preparing for primary care) for their grandchildren aged 0-18 years. The service offers support and education to people who are facing varied and demanding challenges in their role as grandparents. Some are primary carers for their grandchildren or are preparing for their role as primary carers; others are responsible for more irregular support when parents struggle to provide consistent attention, care, shelter and security for their children.

This is a service where grandparents can:

  • meet with other grandparents in a similar situation;
  • new grandparent primary carers can access orientation and support for their role
  • receive peer support from experienced grandparent volunteers
  • learn about organisations and services that can be of assistance;
  • discuss issues;
  • access advocacy advice and support
  • share a free meal and some social time with other grandparents;
  • participate in presentations by guest speakers; and
  • attend group outings and engage in social inclusion activities.
